Signs You Need Mosquito Control
- Being bitten in the yard or on the patio in the evening, or during the day around your ankles
- Mosquitoes coming inside when doors are opened
- Wiggling larvae ("wigglers") in birdbaths, buckets, plant saucers, fountains or pool covers
- A green or neglected swimming pool, spa or pond on your property or next door
- Clouds of mosquitoes rising from shrubs, ground cover or under decks when disturbed
Where Mosquitoes Breed Around Homes
Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water, and the larvae can become biting adults in about a week in warm weather. Around homes, the common sources are:
- Plant saucers, buckets, toys, wheelbarrows and tarps that collect sprinkler water
- Birdbaths, fountains and ponds without fish or circulation
- Clogged rain gutters and downspout drains
- Green pools and spas, and water sitting on pool and boat covers
- Bromeliads and other plants that hold water in their leaves
- Leaking hose bibs, irrigation valves and low spots that stay wet
What Our Mosquito Treatment Includes
- Property inspection. We walk the yard looking for standing water and larvae, including places homeowners often miss: gutters, drains, meter boxes, under decks and inside containers.
- Source reduction. We tip out or point out containers holding water, and explain what needs to be fixed, like a clogged gutter or a leaking valve.
- Larvicide in water that can't be emptied, such as ornamental ponds, drains and catch basins, to stop larvae from becoming adults.
- Barrier treatment on the shaded vegetation, under decks, along fences and in dense shrubs where adult mosquitoes rest during the day.
- Follow-up plan. During warm months, mosquito control usually needs repeat treatments. We explain how often, based on your property.
What Affects the Cost of Mosquito Control
The price depends mostly on the size of the yard, how much dense vegetation needs treatment, and how many breeding sources there are. A small, open yard is a quick treatment. A large lot with heavy landscaping, ponds, fountains or water features takes longer. Whether you choose a one-time treatment before an event or repeat treatments through the warm season also affects cost. When Mosquitoes Are a Health Concern
Mosquitoes in California can carry West Nile virus, and the state reports activity in Southern California counties most summers. Call promptly, and talk to your doctor where relevant, if:
- You are being bitten heavily and someone in the home is elderly, pregnant or has a weakened immune system
- Mosquitoes are biting indoors, especially in bedrooms
- A neglected pool or pond is breeding large numbers of mosquitoes
Dead birds can be a sign of West Nile virus activity. California asks residents to report them at westnile.ca.gov or 1-877-968-2473. Report neglected pools and public breeding sources to Ventura County's vector control program.
Why Oxnard's Setting Keeps Mosquitoes Around
Oxnard sits on a low, flat coastal plain crossed by drainage channels, with harbors, wetlands and the Santa Clara River nearby. Irrigated landscaping keeps many yards damp during the dry months when there's no rain to flush out containers. Mild temperatures mean mosquitoes can stay active well into fall. The practical takeaway: in Oxnard, sprinkler overspray, clogged gutters and plant saucers are often the main mosquito source in a yard, even in the middle of the dry season. Harbor-area homes also collect water on boat covers and dock equipment. Fixing those sources does as much as any spray.
Before and After Treatment
- Empty and turn over anything holding water: saucers, buckets, toys, tarps.
- Change birdbath water at least once a week.
- Clean gutters and make sure downspouts drain away.
- Keep pools and spas circulating and treated, and drain water off covers.
- Repair window and door screens so mosquitoes stay outside.
- Keep people and pets off treated vegetation until it has dried.
