Signs of Bed Bugs
- Bites on skin exposed during sleep, often in a line or small cluster on arms, neck, shoulders or legs
- Rusty or dark spots on sheets, mattress seams and pillowcases (crushed bugs and droppings)
- Live bugs: flat, apple-seed-sized, reddish brown, in mattress seams, box spring corners, behind the headboard and in nightstand joints
- Pale shed skins and tiny white eggs in seams and cracks near the bed
- A sweet, musty smell in heavy infestations
Bed bugs don't mean a home is dirty. They travel in luggage, used furniture, bags and clothing, and they move between apartments through wall voids and outlets.
What Bed Bug Treatment Involves
Inspection
We check the mattress, box spring, bed frame and headboard, nightstands, upholstered chairs and couches, baseboards, outlet covers, curtains and closet areas near the bed. The goal is to confirm bed bugs, find how far they have spread, and check nearby rooms.
Preparation
You get a written prep list before treatment. Preparation matters as much as the treatment itself. It usually means bagging and hot-drying bedding and clothing, reducing clutter around the bed, and pulling furniture away from walls.
Treatment
Treatment combines several methods, because no single product reaches every hiding spot. Depending on the case, that includes steam on mattresses, furniture seams and fabric, crack-and-crevice treatment along bed frames, baseboards and furniture joints, residual dusts in wall voids and outlets, and mattress and box spring encasements. Some cases call for whole-room heat treatment; if the inspection points that way, we explain why and what's involved.
Follow-up
A follow-up visit about two weeks later retreats the room and checks for any bugs that hatched from eggs that survived. More visits may be needed for heavy infestations.
What Affects the Cost of Bed Bug Treatment
Bed bug treatment is priced mainly by the number of rooms and beds involved and how far the infestation has spread. One bedroom with an early infestation is a much smaller job than a whole apartment with bugs in the couch, several beds and a closet. Other factors:
- Number of upholstered furniture pieces to treat
- Clutter, which gives bed bugs more places to hide and makes treatment slower
- Whether adjoining apartments or units also need inspection or treatment
- Number of follow-up visits needed
- Whether mattress encasements are needed
- Whether heat treatment is recommended
When Bed Bugs Need Urgent Attention
- Bed bugs found in a short-term rental, hotel room or vacation home before new guests arrive
- An infestation in the home of an infant, elderly person or someone with a skin condition or heavy reactions to bites
- Bed bugs in a rental between tenants
- Bugs spreading from the bedroom to the living room couch or other bedrooms
Don't use foggers or spray store products on the bed. They scatter bed bugs into walls and other rooms and make professional treatment harder.
California Rules on Bed Bugs in Rentals
Many Oxnard households rent, and the beach neighborhoods have short-term vacation rentals, so bed bug questions often involve a landlord or property manager. California Civil Code sections 1954.600 to 1954.605 set rules for residential landlords: a landlord can't show, rent or lease a unit the landlord knows has a current bed bug infestation, must give tenants written information about bed bugs, and must give notice of inspection results to affected tenants. Tenants must cooperate with inspection and treatment. For homeowners and renters, the practical point is this: report suspected bed bugs to the landlord in writing quickly, and follow the preparation steps so the treatment works. What to Do Before We Arrive
- Don't throw away furniture or mattresses before the inspection.
- Keep sleeping in the same bed.
- Save a bug in clear tape or a sealed bag if you can; it helps confirm the species.
- Don't move items from the affected room to other rooms or to another house.
- Wash and dry bedding on high heat. Drying on high heat for at least 30 minutes is the key step.
After Treatment
Keep encasements on the mattress and box spring for at least a year. Check the seams and headboard every week or two. A few bugs may show up in the first week or two as they come out of hiding and cross treated surfaces. New bites or live bugs after the follow-up visit mean you should call us again.
